A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover is filled edge to edge with a photograph of a steep, green mountain landscape. A long ridge rises from the lower left and climbs towards a blunt summit just left of centre, then slopes down towards the right. Beyond it, darker blue-green ridges recede beneath a cloudy, pale blue sky. The nearer slopes are streaked with narrow paths, exposed rock and changes in grass colour. A bright, uneven green valley or hollow opens at the lower left; near the lower centre, a rough rocky outcrop interrupts the grassy hillside. The right-hand foreground slope is especially vivid, lit in yellow-green and crossed by darker bands of vegetation. No border is visible.

White and pale lettering overlays the upper half of the photograph. In the upper right, “BRECON” appears in large, widely spaced capitals, with “MALE CHOIR” in smaller capitals beneath and “VOICES OF THE BEACONS” in a still smaller line below that. A thin, looping outline in yellow-green and blue curves around and behind this group, forming broad overlapping oval shapes that extend towards the right edge. A small yellow-green dot sits to the left of the word “BRECON”. Across the middle, over the mountainside, a larger line reads “CÔR MEIBION ABERHONDDU”; below it, in smaller pale yellow-green capitals, is “LLEISIAU’R BANNAU”. The text is clean and sharply defined against the landscape. The image is photographic, with natural variations in the grass and rock and soft cloud cover; the lettering and looped motif are graphic overlays.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The ridge gives the cover a strong upward sweep: the eye follows the dark slope towards the summit, then travels down into the luminous green folds of the foreground. The landscape feels expansive, but the low cloud and shadowed distant hills keep it from becoming simply sunlit or idyllic. Light seems to move across the slopes in patches, making the valley appear open and the right-hand hillside almost newly washed in green.

The looping lines around the upper lettering introduce a more delicate, decorative counterpoint to the rugged terrain. They can suggest a voice carried across a landscape, or simply a drawn echo that gives the words room to sit above the mountain. The combination has a quietly ceremonial quality: formal, spacious lettering set against a place that feels weather-shaped and enduring. At the same time, the bright grass and the playful sweep of the outline lend the design a gentle warmth rather than solemnity. The cover holds these moods together without resolving them: sheltering and exposed, grounded and airy, the weight of the mountain balanced by a light trace in the sky.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
