A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover is filled edge to edge with a close-up photograph of layered grey slate. Broad, uneven sheets run diagonally across the frame: a dark, shadowed overhang occupies the upper left, while paler fractured slabs angle down from the upper right towards the centre. Across the lower half, a flatter slate surface shows fine grain, pale speckling, hairline cracks and chipped edges. A narrow, lighter broken edge cuts across the lower right. The layers and their shadows give the otherwise flat stone image a shallow sense of depth. Colours range from charcoal and blue-grey in the upper left to silver, muted grey and faint brownish tones across the centre and bottom; the lighting picks out rough, granular surfaces while leaving the upper layers in deep shadow.

Large, thin, white serif capitals spelling “LLECHI” sit across the upper-left and central area. The letters are widely spaced and tall, with the final letter extending towards the smaller text at right. Beside and just below it, a compact block of bold, condensed white capitals is aligned to the right. It reads “CASGLIAD O GANEUON / SYDD WEDI EU HYSBRYDOLI / GAN GYMUNEDAU / AC ARDALLOEDD Y LLECHI”, followed by a gap and “A COLLECTION OF SONGS / INSPIRED BY THE SLATE REGIONS / AND COMMUNITIES / OF NORTH WALES”. The small lettering lies over the darker and mid-grey stone, remaining distinct against its irregular texture. There is no border or separate framing; the photograph and typography fill the cover.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The slate seems to continue beyond the edges, as if the cover has been cropped from a much larger rock face. Its layers suggest both a natural geological formation and material shaped by human hands: the long, stacked edges resemble pages, roof tiles or strata in a cut bank. That ambiguity gives the image a quiet tension between rugged landscape and ordered construction.

The title’s stately, spacious lettering contrasts with the small, tightly set text beside it. Against the fractured stone, the word feels almost architectural, while the roughness beneath keeps it from seeming polished or monumental. The cool palette and heavy shadows create a still, contemplative mood, with a trace of austerity; the brighter chips of stone offer brief glints rather than warmth. The cover may bring to mind a walk beside an exposed rock face, or the tactile weight of a piece of slate in the hand, without settling on either as its single subject.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
