A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover with a white background and a restrained black-and-white photographic layout. Near the top, the large word “CWLWM” sits centrally in widely spaced, heavy serif capitals. Below it, a horizontal row of five narrow rectangular photographs stretches almost across the cover, with small white gaps between the frames. Each is a tightly cropped monochrome portrait: from left to right, a person with dark curly hair and glasses; a person with dark curly hair, partly veiled by a raised hand; a short-haired person looking sideways above a rough, low foreground surface; a light-haired person with a hand near the chin; and a person in profile beside a window or other dark vertical structure. The dark interiors and faces contrast strongly with the pale background, and the tonal range varies from frame to frame. The photographs have crisp rectangular edges and appear as separate panels rather than one continuous scene.

A broad area of white space separates the photographs from the smaller lettering near the bottom. There, “heddiw” is centred beneath the left half of the row and “’fory” beneath the right half, both in black serif lowercase. The cover has no visible border or additional decoration. Its balance is mostly symmetrical: the title occupies the upper centre, the five portraits form a band across the middle, and the two lower words sit well apart beneath them. The image is photographic, with the high-contrast, softly graded appearance of black-and-white portrait images against a clean, flat white field.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover feels like a series of brief encounters arranged in a quiet gallery: five faces, each confined to its own narrow window, held together by the shared monochrome palette. Their expressions and gestures resist becoming a single group portrait. One person peers through glasses, another raises a hand into the frame, and others turn towards or away from the camera; the sequence suggests different private moods without spelling out a narrative.

The ample white space gives the portraits room to breathe, while the large, emphatic title anchors the page with a more formal presence. There is a gentle tension between that solidity and the intimacy of the small photographs. The row might evoke a contact sheet, a family-album strip, or portraits glimpsed through separate panes, though the carefully spaced frames also make the arrangement feel deliberately composed. Its stark black, white and grey tones lend it a reflective, slightly reserved air, softened by the varied faces and small human gestures.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
