Seiriol Choir
Album artwork for Seiriol Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square, pale yellow-green page is framed on three sides by a broad, intricate Celtic-style knot border: it runs across the top, down the right edge and along the bottom, with the left edge open. The interlaced bands alternate mainly between dark red, green and yellow, outlined in dark ink. The border is interrupted at the lower left, where a short matching strip projects in from the edge, and its upper-right and lower-right corners turn into compact, rounded knot designs.
The central feature is a large ornamental initial, ‘S’, set slightly above and left of the page’s centre. Its curling body is outlined in dark brown and picked out with yellow, green, red and cream. A small bird-like creature curls around the upper loop; lower down, a red circular panel with a pale, pointed motif sits inside the sweeping curve. Smaller spiral forms decorate the upper part of the letter. To the right, dark decorative lettering reads ‘ÓR’ on the upper line and ‘eiriol’ below, with a small dot after each. The letters vary in size and shape, and their curved strokes echo the loops of the initial.
The background is largely unoccupied, leaving broad areas of softly mottled yellow-green around the lettering. The flat, page-like composition has no apparent depth or cast shadows. Its imagery is drawn with fine dark outlines and densely coloured details, giving it the appearance of an illuminated manuscript or a printed reproduction of one. The colours are subdued overall, while the red, green and yellow ornament provides the strongest contrast against the light ground.
What the image evokes.
The page feels both orderly and restless. Its border holds the composition in place, but the interlacing strands keep slipping over and under one another, making the frame seem to move along the edges. Inside it, the looping initial behaves almost like a small creature: its turns and embedded spirals invite the eye to follow a path rather than read the letter at a glance.
The pale ground and hand-drawn-looking outlines suggest the quiet intimacy of a decorated book page, while the saturated knots bring a more festive note. The result sits between text and ornament: the words are present, but the large initial and border claim as much attention as the lettering. It might call to mind medieval book decoration or the familiar visual language of Celtic knotwork, though the image alone does not establish a particular source or period. The tiny bird-like form and the pointed shape in the red roundel remain open to interpretation, lending the central letter a hint of heraldic or fable-like character without settling into a definite story.
