Carolau'r Byd
Cwlwm
Album artwork for Cwlwm, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover has a pale mint-green background, with a large, dark globe near the upper centre. Its visible continents are green, and a white ring separates it from the surrounding field. The globe is partly covered at lower right by a rectangular black-and-white group photograph that begins around the middle of the cover and extends beyond the bottom and right edges. Five people are visible in the photograph, posed close together and looking towards the camera: two figures higher up, two nearer the middle, and one at the bottom left. Their faces and shoulders overlap in the tight crop. The photograph has a light border along its top and left edges, which stands out against the green ground.
Large curved lettering follows the top and sides of the globe: “CAROLAU’R BYD” is set in bold green capitals with a pale outline. Below it, the red word “CYM” curves upwards from the lower left towards the globe, also in outlined capitals. Holly sprigs decorate the margins: a vertical strip of white at the right carries repeated green leaves and red berries, while a larger sprig with dark-edged leaves and red berries sits at the lower left. The lower decoration overlaps the green ground and is partly cut off by the bottom edge. Small pale pink marks or shapes appear near the lower-left side of the globe, though their form is unclear.
The design combines flat, lightly textured green areas and illustrated ornament with the shaded globe and monochrome photograph. The globe is mottled in dark grey and green, with irregular boundaries and a cloudy appearance. The portrait image is grainy and strongly contrasted, while the holly is drawn with dark outlines and simple areas of colour. The overall palette is mint green, deep green, red, white, and black and grey. The curved title lettering frames the globe, while the overlapping photograph creates the strongest contrast and draws attention to the lower-right quadrant.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets a broad, almost planetary image against the intimacy of a small group portrait. The globe suggests distance and scale, but the photograph presses close to the viewer, its faces gathered into a narrow, cropped space. The result holds two registers together: an expansive world and a distinctly human cluster.
The holly, berries and looping display lettering bring a festive, decorative note, while the monochrome portrait and shadowy globe temper that brightness. The green field can feel both fresh and wintry; the red lettering and berries punctuate it like small bursts of warmth. There is a handmade, collage-like quality in the way the photograph sits over the globe and the ornaments inhabit the margins. The composition feels cheerful at first glance, yet its contrasts leave room for a more reflective mood: the world is dark and clouded, and the smiling faces appear as a bright inset against it.
