Alun Jones
Album artwork for Alun Jones, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover with a mostly white background. Near the centre is a large, slightly tilted rectangular colour photograph of a middle-aged man, shown from the chest up and looking towards the camera. He has dark, thick hair brushed across his forehead, a broad face and a faint smile. He wears a dark jacket, a white shirt and a blue-grey bow tie. The photograph is set against a deep blue backdrop; its upper edge rises slightly towards the right, while its lower edge slopes down towards the right. The man fills most of the frame, with his head near the upper centre and his shoulders extending towards the bottom corners. The image has the appearance of a straightforward studio portrait, with even light on his face and a soft shadow beneath his chin.
The white margin is broadest to the right and below the photograph. In the upper left, above and alongside the photograph, dark blue serif capitals read “ALUN JONES”; a smaller italic “Bàs” follows the name. Beneath it are two compact lines of black serif lettering: “EIRIAN OWEN Piano” and “CÔR GODRE’R ARAN”. The text is left aligned, with the first line beginning close to the left edge of the name above. Below the photograph, towards the lower right, “MAB Y MÔR” appears in large, dark blue italic serif capitals. Its placement follows the portrait’s lower edge, with ample white space around it. The cover is built from the contrast between the clean white ground, the saturated blue photograph backdrop and the dark clothing and lettering; there are no visible borders, decorative motifs or additional objects.
What the image evokes.
The angled portrait gives the cover a gently informal quality, as if a formal studio photograph has been placed on the white page by hand. Its deep blue field feels like a small stage behind the sitter, while the unbroken white around it lends the design the quietness of a printed programme or a restrained portrait card. The careful serif lettering and the neat credit lines suggest ceremony and tradition, but the subject’s direct gaze and slight smile keep the presentation approachable.
The composition balances two kinds of stillness: the portrait’s steady, frontal pose and the diagonal edges that make the photograph seem to lean into the page. The blue is vivid enough to hold the eye, yet the dark jacket anchors the lower half of the image. The title below, set apart from the portrait, reads almost like a caption or a closing line. The overall effect is composed and personal, with a hint of formality softened by the handmade feel of the tilted image.
