A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square concert photograph combines a large monochrome view of a male singer on the right with a shadowy audience and band at the left. The singer is shown from the waist or chest upwards, turned towards the left in profile. His eyes are closed and his mouth is open as he sings into a microphone held close to his face. He wears a light short-sleeved shirt with a dark collar or neck detail. His forearm stretches diagonally across the lower half of the cover towards a partly cropped guitar at the lower left; a dark wristwatch is visible. The microphone stand descends diagonally through the space in front of him.

Behind him, several audience members raise their arms into the air. Their hands and faces overlap in the smoky, low-contrast background, while a few small bright shapes and indistinct equipment or instruments cluster near the bottom left. The photograph is mostly black and white, with deep shadows and a grainy, soft-edged appearance. A subdued violet-blue wash is visible across the upper-left background; the singer's shirt and the crowd's raised arms stand out as pale shapes against the dark surroundings. The image runs to the edges without a border.

Large lettering overlays the centre and lower-right portion of the photograph. Across the singer's arm and the darker crowd, “dafydd iwan a’r band” appears in bold, lowercase green letters. Beneath it, “YN FYW!” is set in much larger red capitals, with the exclamation mark at the right. Along the far-right edge, “CYFROL 2” is printed vertically in blue capitals, reading upwards from the bottom. The bright lettering partly covers the photograph and contrasts sharply with its subdued tones.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The image has the compressed intensity of a moment caught from within a crowd: the singer's closed eyes and open mouth suggest concentration, while the raised hands behind him make the performance feel shared and physical. His outstretched arm and the diagonal microphone stand push the eye across the frame, giving the otherwise fixed square image a sense of movement.

The colour lettering lends the cover a blunt, almost poster-like energy. Green, red and blue sit boldly over the shadowy monochrome photograph, as though the words are another layer of stage light. The title crosses the performer rather than sitting apart from him, tying the announcement of the performance to the body and commotion of the scene. The result can feel both intimate and public: one face in close-up, yet surrounded by a crowd whose faces dissolve into darkness.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
