Rhymney Millennium Chorale
Album artwork for Rhymney Millennium Chorale, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover is dominated by a monumental red-brown brick structure set against a clear blue sky. Its broad, curving form rises from the lower left, arches over a large opening near the upper left-centre, and descends into a thick, stepped projection on the right. A separate-looking, rectangular brick mass fills much of the lower-right foreground, its top edge stepping down towards the centre. The structure is cropped by the left, right and bottom edges, making it feel larger than the frame. Through the arch and around the lower edges, small glimpses of a pale, distant landscape are visible.
The brickwork is rendered in close detail, with courses of dark reddish and purplish bricks picked out by lighter mortar. The curved outer face catches warm light, shifting from deep shadow on the left to brighter orange-red across the inner arch and right-facing surfaces. The sky changes from a deeper blue at the top to a paler, almost white band near the horizon. The open arch frames a wedge of sky and distant ground; its dark interior contrasts with the sunlit masonry. The image has a photographic appearance, with pronounced perspective and the texture of the brickwork clearly visible.
Large white serif lettering sits across the upper part of the image, overlapping the sky and brickwork in three lines: “RHYMNEY”, “MILLENNIUM” and “CHORALE”. The lines are centred near the top and decrease in width, with the final word crossing in front of the structure. Along the right edge, a narrow column of orange-red lettering is rotated vertically and reads “THE MILLENNIUM AND BEYOND”; a second, larger line in Welsh, “Y MILENIWM AC YMLAEN”, runs alongside it. The vertical text sits over the blue sky and the edge of the brick structure.
What the image evokes.
The structure has the scale and blunt confidence of a public monument, but its looping outline also suggests a ribbon bent into an arch or a giant piece of masonry caught mid-gesture. The opening is a visual threshold: it draws the eye from the dense, weighty brick surfaces towards the bright sky and the sliver of landscape beyond. That interplay makes the image feel at once grounded and open, solid yet shaped around an absence.
The warm brick against the cool blue sky gives the cover a late-day radiance, though the deep shadow inside the arch keeps it from feeling simply sunny. The stepped block in the foreground adds a more severe, architectural rhythm, while the curving upper form seems almost ceremonial. The oversized white lettering lends the scene a formal, choral quality; the slim bilingual text at the side reads like a discreet inscription on a civic landmark. Together, the monumental scale, clean sky and sculptural silhouette can evoke a modernist public sculpture or a gateway set at the edge of a landscape, without settling on any one symbolic reading.
