David Lloyd
Album artwork for David Lloyd, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover is dominated by a tightly cropped black-and-white portrait of a man, shown in profile facing left. His head fills nearly the entire frame: his swept-back dark hair is cut off by the top edge, while the lower face and neck approach the bottom edge. The strong crop leaves a broad field of black at the left, into which the bridge and tip of his nose project. One eye, set beneath a heavy brow, is visible near the upper middle; the ear is prominent on the right. His lips are parted slightly, and the jaw and cheek are picked out by pale highlights against deep shadow. The portrait is photographic, rendered in stark monochrome, with bright areas across the forehead, nose, cheek, and ear and near-black shadows around the eye, hair, and left side of the face. The background is solid black, merging with the darkest parts of the hair and portrait so that the head seems to emerge from it. There is no visible border.
The title sits across the upper portion of the face. At the left, “David Lloyd” appears in large white serif lettering; to its right, “Y Llais Arian” is set in a paler blue, in slanted serif letters. The two parts share a line, with the blue wording extending over the forehead towards the right edge. In the lower-right corner, a small block of widely spaced pale-blue capitals reads “CYFROL” over “VOLUME”, followed by a large yellow numeral “3”. These inscriptions sit over the dark background and lower edge of the portrait. The limited palette of black, white, grey, blue, and yellow keeps the lettering distinct while preserving the photograph's dramatic contrast.
What the image evokes.
The close crop makes the portrait feel immediate and monumental at once: the face is near enough to study, yet its scale and shadow turn it into something almost sculptural. The left-facing profile seems to press into the empty black space, while the brightly lit ear and cheek hold the image in place on the right. The result has the concentrated intensity of a film close-up, as though a frame has been paused just before speech or song.
The black-and-white treatment carries a sense of age and gravity, though the image itself offers no fixed period. The slanted blue title softens the starkness and lends the upper edge a more lyrical note; the small yellow “3” acts like a bright, practical marker against the otherwise restrained palette. There is a pleasing tension between the intimate, human face and the formal, almost emblematic way it is cropped and presented. It can read as both a candid portrait and a carefully composed tribute, without settling entirely into either mood.
