One Thrilling Combination

Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir

Album artwork for Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.

A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover with a predominantly black background. A broad, curved strip of a concert-hall interior crosses the lower half of the image, rising diagonally from the lower left before sweeping in a shallow arc across to the right. Its upper edge is an ornate, pale-gold balcony or cornice, densely decorated with raised-looking floral and scroll patterns. Warm cream light glows beneath it. Along the lower edge of the lit strip, a long line of small, dark-clad choir members stands shoulder to shoulder, their pale faces forming a broken line against the dark area below. The figures appear very small beside the architectural curve, which gives the scene a pronounced sense of scale and depth.

The upper part of the cover is mostly empty black, providing strong contrast for the lettering. At upper left, the name is set in four centred lines of pale serif capitals: “THE / MORRISTON / ORPHEUS / CHOIR”. Across the upper centre and right, the title is much larger and layered: “one” appears in thin, light-blue lowercase lettering; “thrilling” is written in sweeping white italic script, with a long, curling flourish extending above and to the right; and “combination” sits below in light-blue, thin, italic lowercase letters. The title overlaps the black field and approaches the curved architectural band, with the white script providing the strongest typographic emphasis.

Near the bottom centre, small gold serif lettering reads “Musical Director” and “Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd”; beneath it, “SIÂN PEARCE” appears in pale capitals. The image combines a photograph-like view of the hall and choir with highly prominent graphic typography. Gold, amber and cream in the hall contrast with the black background, while the blue title lettering adds a cool accent. No border is visible.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The sweep of the balcony makes the cover feel like a glimpse into a large, curved auditorium, with the choir arranged as a slender human fringe along its edge. The architecture seems almost to cradle the line of singers: intricate, formal ornament above, a band of warm light beneath, and then the small figures held against darkness. That contrast gives the image both ceremony and intimacy. The choir is presented collectively, as a continuous gathering rather than as a set of individual portraits.

The lettering introduces a more fluid, playful mood. The calligraphic “thrilling” seems to move across the cover, its loops echoing the arc of the balcony without simply copying it. Together with the fine blue italics, it lends the otherwise formal scene a sense of lift and motion. The black space could suggest a darkened auditorium or a theatrical backdrop; the gold-lit curve, in turn, might evoke a proscenium or an ornate interior seen from the stalls. The result balances grandeur with a touch of lightness, as if a stately setting has been opened up by the lively sweep of the words.
