Carreg Lafar
Album artwork for Carreg Lafar, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover is built around a large circular emblem that nearly fills the frame. Its dark blue-green outline encloses a mottled green field, with three thick, pale-edged spirals curling inward: one near the top centre and two across the lower half. Together they form a balanced, three-part pattern, while the large white word “HYN” sits across the middle and partly obscures the design. The circle is surrounded by an irregular, crumpled-looking ground in pale yellow-green and cream, visible most clearly in the corners and around the outer edge. There is no separate frame or blank margin.
The emblem’s surface is uneven and richly varied: deep blue, teal and near-black strokes border the spirals, with thin light outlines and patches of green, olive, grey and cream within them. The central field has a cloudy, stone-like appearance, with scattered dark marks and lighter areas. The surrounding ground is brighter and more yellow, its ridged, irregular texture catching the eye against the smoother, darker circular design. The image has an aged, earthy palette, with the lettering providing the strongest contrast.
“HYN” is centred over the emblem in large white capitals. The letters are narrow and sharply shaped, with fine serifs and a classical, high-contrast appearance. Along the bottom edge, “CARREG LAFAR” appears in much larger outlined capitals, spanning almost the full width. The letters have pale interiors, dark outlines and a further light edge, and sit over the bright textured ground; their lower portions come close to the edge of the cover. The lettering and emblem appear integrated into a single textured image rather than laid out with generous separation.
What the image evokes.
The spirals suggest movement held in place: each line turns inward, as if drawing the eye into a whirlpool, a carved stone motif or a mark traced repeatedly by hand. Their three-part arrangement feels emblematic, almost heraldic, yet the irregular edges and cloudy green interior keep the circle from feeling like a perfectly clean logo. It seems at once ancient and vividly present.
The contrast between the dark, cool spirals and the yellow-green ground gives the image a weathered, mineral quality. The surface might call to mind moss on stone, tarnished metal or a fragment of decorated masonry, though none of these readings is definitive. The large white “HYN” interrupts the pattern like a clear voice across a dense field of marks. Beneath it, the outlined title has a more ornamental, old-fashioned air, so the two lines of lettering carry distinct visual weights. The result balances a quiet sense of age with the directness of a boldly centred emblem.
