Single artwork for Elin Fflur, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square monochrome cover shows a woman in left-facing profile, her head and shoulders filling most of the image. Her face sits left of centre, angled slightly downwards; her eyes appear closed or lowered, and her long, wavy hair falls over her right shoulder. A double-exposure-like image of trees and branches is superimposed across her hair, face, neck and upper body. Dark, fine branches spread across the crown of her head and over the area around her eye, while lighter foliage and a pale, sparkling-looking texture blend into the hair and shoulder. The woman’s dark clothing is visible as a narrow diagonal shape near the lower edge.
The portrait is cropped at the top and bottom, with the figure extending beyond the lower frame. Her hair reaches towards the right edge, where loose strands stand out against the pale background. The background is otherwise largely empty, with a soft grey gradient and brighter space around the left side of her face. The image uses a restrained range of white, silver-grey and deep charcoal, with strong contrast in the hair and branches and softer tonal transitions across the face and background. It has a photographic appearance, with the layered tree imagery producing a composite, dreamlike effect.
At the top centre, widely spaced white capitals read “ELIN FFLUR”. A thin horizontal line sits directly beneath the name. Below it, in much smaller white capitals, is “CLORIAU CUDD”. The text is aligned centrally above the portrait and remains legible against the darker area at the top.
What the image evokes.
The portrait and woodland imagery seem to occupy the same space: the branches do not sit behind the woman so much as pass through her outline, turning hair into a canopy and the face into part of a landscape. This suggests a quiet kinship between body and nature, though the overlay also has the quality of a memory or thought settling over a portrait.
Her lowered gaze and the monochrome palette lend the image a reflective calm. The pale ground keeps the composition airy, while the dark tangle over her head and eye introduces a more inward, slightly mysterious note. There is a tension between the close, intimate scale of the face and the breadth implied by the trees. The fine lettering above it feels restrained and distant, like a small heading suspended over a much larger private image.
