Cerdded Dros Y Mynydd
Iona & Andy
Album artwork for Iona & Andy, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines a bright, flower-filled landscape with a central rectangular portrait. A narrow band of pale green sky runs across the top above a golden field. Along the left and right edges, the landscape is crowded with red, magenta and orange flowers and dark green foliage; flowers also overlap the lower edge of the portrait. The dense, saturated vegetation forms an irregular frame around the central image.
The portrait shows a smiling older man and woman standing close together, framed from about the waist up. The man is on the left, slightly behind the woman, with his arm around her shoulders. He has short grey hair and a moustache, and wears a dark leather-like jacket over a blue-grey shirt. The woman has reddish-brown, voluminous hair and wears a dark jacket over a pale top. Behind them, a blue lake or river curves beneath a mountain slope: a steep, purple-brown peak rises at the upper right, with softer, paler hills and sky to the left. The portrait has a pale, uneven border and appears set into the flowered scene like a print or collage. Its lower edge is partly obscured by the flowers.
The colours are vivid and warm overall, with yellow and orange in the field and blossoms set against the cool blue water and pale sky. The figures’ dark clothes give the central portrait weight, while their faces and the woman’s top catch the light. The image has a soft, painterly appearance, with blended landscape details and slightly softened edges; the portrait and surrounding floral scene read as layered visual elements.
At the top left, the large pale lettering “Iona ac Andy” sits across the green sky and golden field. Its irregular, hand-drawn-looking letters have a slight shadow or dark outline. Near the bottom, over the flowers, the smaller pale text “cerdded dros y mynydd” follows a roughly horizontal line; it too has dark edging for contrast.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels like a keepsake assembled from a portrait and a remembered landscape. The couple’s easy closeness gives the centre a personal, domestic warmth, while the mountain and water open it out into something more expansive. Flowers pressing in from every edge make the scene feel abundant, almost too lush to contain, as though the portrait has been placed within a painted garden.
There is a pleasing tension between the posed stillness of the photograph and the lively, decorative surroundings. The uneven pale border suggests a picture laid onto a colourful surface, while the landscape seems to continue beyond it. The result recalls an illustrated postcard or a family photograph framed by a garden, with a homespun, sentimental character. The saturated colours and informal lettering add a celebratory note, though the mountainous backdrop lends the image a quieter, contemplative distance.
