Inside the image.
A square cover is dominated by a tightly cropped photographic portrait of a pale-skinned, middle-aged man. His head and shoulders fill almost the entire left and centre of the image: the top of his head is cut off by the upper edge, and his dark jacket and white shirt disappear below the bottom. He faces forward with a slight turn, looking towards the viewer. He has short, receding brown hair, a full brown-and-grey beard and moustache, and a neutral, closed-mouth expression. A bright, softly lit face stands out against the deep black background at left. He wears a dark suit jacket, crisp white shirt and pale silver tie.
A narrow vertical strip just right of centre separates the portrait from a blue panel along the right edge. The strip is black, edged with a fine yellow-green line on its right, and carries small, vertically arranged lettering near the top and larger spaced lettering lower down. The right panel is dark blue with mottled, softly flowing lighter-blue patterns, suggesting a textured or abstract backdrop. The portrait is closely framed and sharply contrasted with these graphic side panels; there is little open space around the face.
Large white serif capitals reading “GWYN / HUGHES / JONES” are stacked in three lines in the upper-right area, over the blue panel and close to the vertical divider. The letters are narrow and tall, with slightly irregular-looking contours and tight line spacing. Along the black divider, “CYFRROL” appears in small vertical capitals near the top; lower down, “CANU R CYMRU” is set vertically in widely spaced grey capitals. The latter lettering sits over the portrait’s dark shoulder area as well as the divider, with a small yellow-green “Y” between the words. The overall design combines a close-up studio-style photograph with restrained, high-contrast typography and a narrow coloured rule.
What the image evokes.
The portrait’s scale gives it an immediate, personal presence: the viewer meets the man’s steady gaze before noticing the narrow columns of text and colour beside him. The almost monochrome clothes and black ground make the face feel plainspoken and direct, while the cool blue panel introduces a more formal, designed edge. Its soft, indistinct pattern hints at depth without resolving into a recognisable place or object.
The upright lettering and thin yellow-green rule lend the cover a measured, column-like rhythm, as though the portrait were set within a title page or a small stage frame. That order sits against the unvarnished closeness of the photograph. The result can feel both intimate and ceremonial: a single, human face presented with the composure of a formal programme, yet not made distant by the close crop. The blue and black areas retain a quiet ambiguity, suggesting atmosphere more than a definite setting.
