Cwmbach Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Cwmbach Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover is filled by a stylised, interlocking image of a large red dragon against a pale, loosely painted background. The dragon dominates the centre and lower half: its long, curved body forms a broad loop, with a lighter inner section and a dark outline, while its neck rises towards the upper right into a pointed head with a long, angular snout. A small dark eye is visible. Red, branching shapes at the left suggest a raised forelimb or claw, and a narrow red form extends diagonally across the upper area. The design is cropped close to the dragon, which overlaps and merges with other pale outlines.
The ground is mottled in soft pink, lilac, grey and off-white. Large, faint lavender and blue-grey contours behind the dragon resemble further sweeping animal forms or decorative curves, though they do not resolve into a clearly distinct subject. A narrow band of muted green and blue runs across the lower portion behind the dragon; beneath it, the bottom edge contains a pointed, zigzag pattern in pale blue, cream and ochre. The image has no separate border. Its colours are subdued and slightly hazy, with the saturated red dragon providing the strongest contrast. The illustration appears hand-drawn or painted, with uneven outlines and broad areas of soft colour rather than photographic detail.
At the top, large dark green serif lettering reads “Cân y Cymoedd”. Directly below it, a smaller black line reads “Corau Meibion De Cymru”. Across the lower third, overlapping the dragon and the background band, large pale serif capitals with dark edging read “THE SINGING VALLEYS”. A smaller black line beneath reads “The Male Choirs of South Wales”. The title lines are centred and closely stacked; the Welsh heading sits prominently above the imagery, while the English title anchors the bottom.
What the image evokes.
The red dragon makes the design feel emblematic, almost like a heraldic creature enlarged until it becomes a landscape in its own right. Its looping body gives the cover a sense of movement and continuity, while the sharply rising head and claw-like branches interrupt that curve with sudden angles. The figure is both forceful and oddly gentle: its colour is bold, but the pale, cloudy surroundings soften its presence.
The faint, overlapping contours create an impression of an old, washed mural or a remembered illustration, with forms emerging and receding rather than occupying a clear space. The green-blue strip near the bottom can read as a distant horizon or a ribbon of water, while the angular pattern below it suggests a decorative border without enclosing the scene. The paired Welsh and English titles give the layout a measured, formal quality, set against an image whose loose lines feel more fluid. Together, these features leave an impression of folk emblem and dreamlike pageant: recognisable and ceremonial, yet softened by ambiguity and faded colour.
