She faces the viewer, with her head slightly angled and her gaze directed towards the camera. She has long, wavy auburn hair, fine-framed glasses and a small necklace; a burgundy-red top is visible along the lower edge. Her face and upper body occupy most of the centre and right side, while a large harp fills much of the left foreground. Its pale wooden frame curves down from the top left, and rows of strings and tuning mechanisms form a fine vertical pattern beside her. The woman overlaps the instrument, bringing the portrait forward against the darker background. Behind them is a mottled, deep green interior, with shadowed areas and a few indistinct warm-toned details near the right edge. The light falls evenly across the woman's face and hair, making her the brightest element; the harp is also warmly lit, while the background remains subdued. The overall palette combines green and brown with the pale wood of the harp, auburn hair, and small areas of red clothing. The image is a straightforward colour photograph, without a visible border or separate graphic framing. White lettering sits over the lower-left portion of the photograph, crossing in front of the harp and partly extending towards the woman's shoulder. “Elen” appears in very large, thin, high-contrast serif letters. Beneath it, “HYDREF” is set in smaller uppercase serif letters, more compact and heavier in appearance. Both lines are left-aligned and stand out clearly against the darker harp and background. ASSOCIATIONS AND AESTHETIC IMPRESSIONS The image balances the intimacy of a portrait with the imposing, intricate presence of the harp. Its strings make a delicate screen at the left, while the woman's relaxed smile and direct gaze draw the composition back towards a personal encounter. The instrument suggests ceremony or a recital, yet the close crop and warm, natural expression keep the scene informal rather than grand. The green backdrop gives the photograph a sheltered, almost theatrical depth: it could be a richly coloured room glimpsed behind a performer, or simply a dark setting chosen to let the pale harp and face emerge. The large, elegant lettering lends the cover a formal, literary air, but its placement directly over the photograph keeps it grounded in the image. Together, these qualities leave a gentle tension between polished presentation and approachable warmth. READABLE LETTERING Elen — Lower left, large white serif lettering over the harp and photograph. HYDREF — Lower left, directly beneath “Elen”, in smaller white uppercase serif lettering. REUSE AND ATTRIBUTION Visual notes on Elen Hydref — dbcovers.
