Its upright shaft and broad arms are outlined in dark, uneven lines and coloured in mottled greens, yellow-greens and touches of blue. The cross has a circular ring joining its four arms. At the centre of the ring is a round, raised-looking medallion, edged with several small blue-green circles and marked inside with a darker green shape. The ends of the arms and the upper and lower sections of the shaft contain compact looping and interlaced patterns. A pale circular motif sits near the top of the shaft; the lower shaft carries a blue, triangular knot-like design. The arms end in blocky, rounded forms, with pale circular details visible in the left and right ends. The cross is nearly as tall and wide as the image, with its top close to the upper edge and its lower shaft continuing beyond the bottom edge. Its left arm begins near the left margin and its right arm reaches the right margin. The design is almost symmetrical around the central medallion, though the hand-drawn outlines and internal marks vary from side to side. In the background, loose washes of pale cream, white, yellow and green blend into one another, with stronger turquoise and blue patches near the lower-left corner and along the bottom. Small dark-blue specks appear in the lower-left area. The surface has a visibly irregular, watery appearance, with soft colour blooms and fine, uneven outlines rather than photographic detail. There is no enclosing border. The words “ac eraill” appear in dark blue at the upper left, on a pale area beside the top of the cross. The lowercase lettering is large and widely spaced, with rounded, slightly irregular forms; it occupies much of the open space to the left of the cross’s upper shaft. ASSOCIATIONS AND AESTHETIC IMPRESSIONS The cross seems at once architectural and organic: its broad, weighty outline suggests a carved object, while the watery greens and wandering contours make it feel as though it has surfaced from a stained page or a patch of moss. The small circles embedded around its centre resemble beads or settings, lending the central disc the quiet insistence of a clasp, seal or compass point. The interlaced ornament invites thoughts of medieval manuscript borders and carved stonework, but the blurred washes resist the hard authority of a monument. Blue runs beneath the green like water under vegetation, and the scattered specks give the lower corner a faint sense of spray or pigment caught on paper. The result balances the formal presence of an emblem with the looseness of something grown, weathered or remembered. It can read as devotional, folkloric or simply decorative without settling into any one of those meanings. READABLE LETTERING ac eraill — Upper left, beside the cross’s upper shaft.
