Bought four of these to place around our backyard. We have two dogs and 6 backyard chickens so we get a fair amount of flies even keeping the yard cleaned up daily. We have used a number of different fly "traps" from stinky to sticky and even tried fly "predators," but somehow the shape and color of these is far more effective than anything else we've tried. I used arched wrought iron basket hangers to hang them around the yard. One reviewer recommended making black dots on them with a marker to attract flies and we tried one with and one without initially. The reviewer was right, the dots attract more flies! So we put random black dots on all of them and they are by far the most effective fly control we have ever had. These things are loaded with flies! They also seem to attract yellow jackets, which is a bonus. We have a lot of honey bees in our yard and I was worried they would get caught, but so far only one honey bee met his fate, otherwise they are loaded with flies, gnats and yellow jackets. We are so pleased with the effectiveness that we intend to buy these every summer.

Used these for trapping fruit flies in my kitchen. They don’t smell so they’re perfect for using indoors. I hung them up with a chain above my kitchen table and placed another one on the counter near the opening of my trash can.

Didn’t attract any fruit flies until I put some bait in the bottom: basically, I placed a small piece of fruit in the bottom part of one of the openings. After 24h, caught 25-30 flies.

If you have the black biting flies, may be a good idea to place another type of bait there, like a piece of meat or coldcuts.

When you’re done: Just make sure to spray it down with insecticide outside (away from kids/pets) and bag it up securely (no holes) before putting it in the big trash bin outside, otherwise the larva/eggs can grow on the bait (piece of fruit in this case) and then you’re back to square one with tons of flies.

It sticks a lot of flies. The best thing is it has NO odor at all!! I think I can put one for 6 months and 2 means 1 package is enough for the whole year. Very convenient. Just hang it on the tree. After some days not all the flies would go to it as it is getting full and there is actually no smell to attract flies. But I think it's still good enough.

Have been using this product in the gallon size for more than 10 years in the Northwoods where biting flies travel in black clouds. May even be worse than the mosquitos and that is saying something!

These gallon jugs are absolute extermination for all flies. Here are my recommendations:

1.) Fill jugs no more than 1/3 to start; 1/4 is minimum and better. This maximizes the stench. Once some flies get caught and rot in the sun, more liquid can be added. No more than 50%. Make sure there are lots of dead flies first before adding water.

2.). Put jug close to ground, hanging from a tree/shrub branch or tie some rope or fishing line around trunk so jug is near ground.

3.). Find locations that are mostly sunny for entire day. Mostly sunny for most of day and partly sunny for the rest is fine. They don’t like full sun with no shade. They don’t like full shade. That is why I hang from branches.

4.). Find a location that is calm, or mostly calm for entire day. They don’t like wind.

5.). Hot, muggy, sunny, calm drives them aggressive! In other words, they love the jugs.

6.). Put out as soon as winter is over where a freeze is unlikely. This will be long before any flies or bugs are around. This allows the flies to find the jugs early and catch as many of the first hatch as possible to lessen later hatches.

7.). Since your jugs are in mostly sun, the liquid will evaporate. Keep the liquid near 50%, but not over. Check weekly.

8.). Shake jugs, mixing dead flies with liquid, daily. Be careful not to spill or get it on you. I swirl the jugs carefully.

9.). By starting early in the season, you can get in 1-2 refills of the jug with new bait, dumping out the dead flies each time. If you start later when flies are a visible problem, as I’ve done wrong before, the jug gets full later in the summer and a refill is almost a waste as fall is near and fly activity drops off.

10.). If you follow these steps, the jug will have no liquid but be to the top with flies. It will weigh many pounds. Your branch and/or twine may break. Keep in mind when placing initially. Key is to get flies to sink to bottom of jug and not float on top. Only way to do this is to keep mixing daily and allow time for flies to rot, making them sink to the bottom. Hot sun, accelerates this. Otherwise, you will dump the jug with room to spare and not get full value. May even have 50% water still left. This is no good! A minor issue, but if you want maximum extermination, follow.

Finally, if you do it right, with 2-3 jug refills and the right amount of jugs out at one time, you will decimate the fly population for the following season. Believe me, I live in a national forest where it would seem impossible.

I have 10 of the gallon jugs out at a time and fill each 2-3 times per season. 2 acres of property. DO NOT PLACE NEAR HOUSE/DOORS! You will attract into the house.

Reuse jugs next season and buy new bait. I dump and clean in the lake. Fish like it!

Good luck!

UPDATE 6/24/19:

For the first time in 10 years of use and knowing the optimal location, etc, a few locations that were great for years, were not attracting many this year. They were still killing flies but not at normal pace. Other locations were still great for the traps. I had to move some of the jugs around to where activity was at peak.

I am only pointing out that conditions and optimal locations can change, even after a decade! Not sure why this happened as the shade, wind, etc were consistent over the years. Also, certain types of trees seem to hold more flies than others.

It would appear that using multiple jugs in order to find best location for that year, may be necessary. You will still kill thousands but not millions under optimal location!

UPDATE: 6/26/19 -

The flies do not need to drown for this to be effective! I used to think that the flies would escape if not drowned. Wrong! They are obsessed with the stench and will stay inside forever, eventually dying. Swirl at least daily but don’t worry that they are not underwater.

Try to keep 2-3 inches of water at bottom of gallon jug at all times and swirl multiple times per day. Where I live, they fill every 6-8 weeks. My goal is a first refill from mid-June to July 1. Last refill is mid-August.

Alright. So I live in swampy Sussex county Delaware. The flies here are a plague on our community. Yeah, not anymore.

Nothing can really prepare you for the foul, gross, wiggling jar of dead flies and maggots feasting on their dead kin. Nothing.

A friend recommended this product after her aunt had used them to keep flies away from her garden so I'm like what the hell. Why not. After a couple of hours we has maybe 4 flies in our smaller jug. When we woke up the next morning there was a gross half dead half alive mixture of flies...so I'm lovin it.

As the days are warmer and rainy in the evening i watch the smaller jug fill with a twisted sense of satisfaction....these gross little gluttons wont be on MY bbq chicken. Hell naw! Right...

After the volume of flies drawn to these plastic death chamber increases day over day I decide maybe I should have gotten the gallon size to begin with...meh whatever.

I purchased the gallon jug and placed it next to the smaller jug, I'm giving the flies options. Die in jug A or jug B. I'm all about options.

The smaller jug is now full to the top of dead flies and a legion of gross maggots. As others have stated this kinda renders the products "reuseable" pitch kinda pointless unless you're willing to dump the goop inside. I am not.

The gallon jug is filling and I continue to watch with the same smug countenance as before. Hmmph! Bite me why don't'cha.

This fly trap is amazing. Normally, I have flies who buzz around my back door, waiting for a chance to break in. Not now. They are 100 feet away transfixed on the Victor Fly Trap stink. (For the record, it does smell slightly rotten, but I don't find it too repulsive or strong.) The hook on top of the container is metal; I just hung it off a wire fence. I am attaching a photo after about a week. I'm tempted to buy more as the trap has been so productive.

Edited to add: The stink definitely gets worse. I ended up buying three more of these and have cleaned out the first one once. I dry-heaved the entire time. I don't consider myself much of a baby for these things, but that was rather horrible smelling. I don't think this is a negative, as it is what attracts flies... just wanted to properly warn ppl who may have small yards.

Also... the top white pieces have broken off of mine on windy days. I think the sun made them brittle. I can't tell if this makes them less effective.

Finally... do not leave these where you dog might decide to pick it up, chew on it and eat the contents. Husband called in a panic thinking our dog was poisoned (they are safe for dogs and kids to ingest, apparently.) The dog was fine and even seemed very happy from her new meal; however, she stunk and did not get cuddles for a few days!
