Widdershins is the first book in Jordan L. Hawk’s Whyborne & Griffin series. I’d heard quite a bit of buzz about this series in one of my reading groups. I took the plunge, and I have absolutely no regrets about this decision.

Percival Endicott Whyborne spends his days working in a museum as a comparative philologist, and he is perfectly content with his solitary life. When private detective Griffin Flaherty believes that an ancient book may be the key to his case, Whyborne offers to help with translation. Before he knows it, the shy and withdrawn Whyborne is thrown into the middle of something that defies explanation. Something truly terrifying is afoot, and Whyborne and Griffin must team up if they are going to defeat the evil that has been unleashed. As Whyborne spends more time with Griffin, he finds it more and more difficult to suppress his feelings. He thinks it impossible that Griffin could ever return those feelings. But after seeing some of the things that he has seen, Whyborne should know that anything is possible.

It’s hard to describe Widdershins. It’s a Victorian-era American m/m paranormal, but parsing it down into a few descriptors does not do it justice. It’s so much more than that. To begin with, Widdershins refers to the name of the New England city that Whyborne calls home. His ancestors have lived in Widdershins for centuries, but that’s all I can say about them without giving away too much. Widdershins is a rather staid locale, but there is something sinister lurking beneath the surface.

Whyborne and Griffin are an unlikely pair, but despite their vast differences, their mutual understanding is established almost immediately. I love that Griffin is the more outgoing one, but Whyborne is significantly taller. I loved the way their relationship developed slowly, but once the spark was lit, wow!

If I had one complaint about this book, it would be that Whyborne does not like his given name. Percival is a perfectly lovely name, but he doesn’t like it. He likes Percy even less. Griffin’s solution for a nickname is rather endearing, but you’ll have to read the book to find out more about that.

I would absolutely recommend Widdershins. This is the perfect blend of romance, mystery, and action. I have actually read the first three books in the series. The tenth book has just been released, and from what I understand, Hawk plans to end the series with book eleven. Armed with this knowledge, I have been rationing out my reading experience even though every instinct has me wanting to ignore my family in favor of a marathon reading experience. I am certainly looking forward to reading anything and everything Hawk has to offer.

I was actually not sure what to expect with this first in the lengthy Whyborne & Griffin series from author Jordan L. Hawk, but I was completely blown away.

The story is a supernatural fantasy set in Victorian-era New England in the title town of Widdershins. Percival Whyborne is a painfully shy linguist in the upper crust museum, who spends his days throwing himself into his work and hiding from the majority of his colleagues (most of whom either ignore him or bully him). His sole friend is determined colleague Christine, who has just returned from a successful archeological find in Egypt and whose spine of steel helps her stare down any of the stodgy males who feel a woman should not be in the field. Whyborne's life changes dramatically with the arrival of ex-Pinkerton detective Griffin, who has been tasked with investigating the death of the son of one of the museum's luminaries, whose last action was to send his father an ancient book in a strange language, which Whyborne must translate for clues. The closeted Whyborne is entranced by the enigmatic Griffin, but determined to stay at a distance. However, the translation leads to various fantastical elements, including cults, terrifying creatures, duplicity among the high society, and dredging up of the past for both men. The jeopardy throws them together and they must pool their resources to save humanity.

First off, the book succeeds in all areas. If you are looking for a riveting supernatural fantasy adventure (along the lines of Mark Frost's The List of 7), then this book is for you. It is fascinating, exciting and never stumbles over too much exposition. Hawk brilliantly sets the period and the atmosphere and then expertly develops her characters, so that you have some genuine concern for their well being and the outcome. I could not put the book down.

If you are interested in the m/m romance elements, then look no further as well. Hawk has a nice slow burn initially on the chemistry between the male leads. It is fun to read the inexorable progression of watching the sheltered, bashful Whyborne find his inner defenses knocked down one at a time by the more outgoing, but still sensitive man of action Griffin. Whyborne spends a good deal of the early chapters confused and trying to determine whether he is reading the signals correctly and Griffin is actually flirting with him. When the men finally hook up in a series of genuinely erotic trysts, Whyborne begins to blossom in all ways (including as a man of action) and Griffin's strength is tempered by some understandable shell shock from previous horrors experienced. The two main characters have a strong chemistry, nice banter and are appealing in all ways.

I enjoyed the final revelations of the book - and the addition of Christine as a third musketeer type to bolster the action and, when necessary, kick one or both of the respective men in the butts to get them back on track. The conclusion is exciting and I cannot wait to read more in this series, which is off to a stellar start. What more can one day - terrific fantasy elements, intelligent writing, lots of action and scorching m/m sex between two relatable hot characeters - I loved it. Also, a special shout out to the book cover art. Not sure who the models are standing in for Whyborne and Griffin, but they (especially Whyborne) are spitting images are how the author describes them in the novel.

This book was such a satisfying read. The plot flowed well, a perfect combination of action, horror and romance. There were quite a few candidates for the villain, and it was fun trying to figure out all the angles. The cgaracters were realistic, opposites yet in the end the same in their flaws and insecurities. It was fun seeing Whyborne grow into his strengths, his self doubt was understandable and well explained. At first Griffin seemed like the strong detective of a lot of stories, yet inside he was vulnerable. I loved them both by the end, and I enjoyed their love for each other. Christine was a great secondary character, strong and independent, eccentric and warm. I don't often find the horror elements of books very frightening, but in this book the writer did a great job of making them very personal. The end of the world is threatening, but the struggle to deal with the morality of reviving a dead loved one is just horrifying. I strongly recommend this book, and I intend to read the entire series.

I don't know how this movie manages to be so good after all these years, but it still holds up. Brendan Frasier and Pauly Shore are national treasures and give us almost endless quotable dialogue in this masterpiece. My only hope is that in a million years in some sort of Jetsons-esque future, a geeky kid digging a rocket pool finds a vhs copy of this movie frozen in a glacier and is able to use his brain wave gun to shoot it into his cyborg mind and learn to feel something again so he can save humanity, one bud-dy at a time.

I love a film that is funny and has great music -- Encino Man fits the bill. Even though the story is unrealistic, it is very funny. Brendan Fraser rocks the roll of the cave man, Link. It may not be classified as a great film, but it's a classic comedy from its era for me. It's an especially good movie for those of us who are teenagers at heart.

Sarah Fontaine

This movie is a time capsule from the early 90s, complete with the quirky antics of Paulie Shore and the beautiful, young Brenden Fraser before Hollywood destroyed him. If you didn’t watch it and like it in the 90s, you aren’t probably going to like it now. But it’s a fun movie to pull out and show the your preteens and teens so they can judge you more.
